Cycling Record Broken

All of the 48 finalists in the 2010 Cycling Championships are now know after the year 4 heats today. Another record was broken today also when Zach G. sliced 2 seconds off Nathan C.'s 2009 Year 4 Boys' record.

Ex FOS old girl Laura Wood will join Max Beckert to present the ribbons to the first three in each age group and the 4th place-getters will also receive a certificate. Laura is a member of the NZ Triathlon squad and an accomplished cyclist. (photo of Laura opposite and read a Press Article about her here )

The finals start at 12.40pm with the ride offs for 3rd/4th starting with the Year 0/1 Girls and moving to the Year 6 Boys ride off at 1.35pm. The 1st/2nd ride offs will take place from 1.40pm until 2.35pm followed by prize-giving at 2.45pm. If wet, the finals will be postponed till Wednesday 15 December.

All finalists are on this blog, a few postings below and also under the "Useful Links" section and under "Cycle Entry List 2010".

We won the A grade volleyball final!

We won the A grade volleyball final!

Our boys Matisse, Ed, Garrick, Harry W and Yuri went in as underdogs having lost the previous week to their finals opponents Mairehau A in pool play.
Mairehau were confident but our boys stunned them from the outset with calm, quick precision.
Fendalton played a fast game moving and diving desperately all over the court, determined to make the opposition work for every point.
Fendalton played the more intelligent, strategic game, remaining calm and cool under pressure to win 10 games to 8
True Champions!

Fendalton also won the B Grade final
Ashleigh, Brittany, Helena, Natsuko and Georgia were convincing winners.
Again the developing skill level of our girls was wonderful to watch.

Other results are pending but with another 7 teams in the competition and lots of wins in the final games we are confident of more great results in the other grades.

Tee Ball Champions and Cricket 3rd and 5th

Our A Tee Ball team are Canterbury Champions again after a close pool game against Elmwood A which they either lost by one run or drew - we have conflicting reports. In any case, we have more points on the season's table, with a draw or a close loss, winning the trophy for us. Well done Tee Ballers!

The Blue Milo Cricket team ended up third= in the Milo Trophy after good wins against Oaklands and St. Albans and a close loss to eventual winners, Paparoa Street. Unfortunately the official play off for third never took place due to an oversight form Canterbury Cricket, so we take a third=.

The Red Milo Cricket team ended up 5th in the B Grade after one win and two close losses (by 1 run and 4 runs) in pool play. They then won their play off for 5th against Marshlands A.

No results from the Volleyball players yet........

Two Relay Wins at the Centrals!

Ben M-L took a fantastic 4h in the 11 boys' 1200m in a new PB of 4.03
- the first three ahead of him were all Year 7 boys

The Athletics team performed brilliantly at the Primary Sports Canterbury Athletic Championships at QEII Stadium today and we could quite easily say we are the fastest school in Canterbury! All four of our 9 and 10 year old sprint relay teams won their heats and then the 9 and 10 year girls' teams WON their finals - a feat very rarely (if ever) achieved by the same school! The boys couldn't quite match them with the 9 years team disqualified with the team winning, one they beat in the heats. The 10 boys then took a super second in their final!

Nine of our distance runners finished in the first ten in their fields of 34-36 with Alex E running a smart race to place 2nd in the 9 years, Ben M-L 4th in the 11 years and Megan A 5th in the 10 years. Sophie W ran a well timed 50m to win her eat then win the bronze in the 9 years' girls. Full results are under the Primary Results section of: http://www.primarysportscanterbury.org.nz

Sprint Orienteering

Jacob and Fergus did a superb time in the Sprint event
Moe and Liam, some of the youngest competitors competing

Another successful day today for the FOS orienteers, this time at Halswell Quarry for the Sprints event. We again had the biggest representation from any school and all children did extremely well as they had either 20 (boys) or 25 (girls) controls to find. Sam B and Ben H were tentatively in 5th place in the Boys' recording just over 12 minutes! With their performance it looks like the boys should take 3rd in the teams' race and some strong girls' results again should see them retain their second place. Congratulations to Redcliffs School who easily won both Year 6 and under grades.

Well done to all of our competitors, ranging from Year 2 to Year 6 children. Thanks to Mrs Williamson and Mrs Husband for their help today also and of course to the parents, many who had to shadow their children...and came back looking puffed! Full results should be on soon at paponz.org

Orienteering Teams 2nd and 3rd after Day One

Austin and Josh thrilled to finish the long course
After Day One of the Canterbury Schools' Orienteering Festival, the Fendalton Girls' team lies second and the Boys' team lies 3rd=. We had the biggest entry of all the schools involved at the Long Course Championships at Bottle Lake Forest yesterday.

The children found the course challenging but all of them eventually emerged from the forest with smiles on their red faces due to the very warm conditions. Our top performers yesterday in the boys' were Toby W taking 7th (18.39) and Jack M 8th (19.14) out of 41 finishers over the 1.9km course of 15 controls. Our top girls were Olivia M/Jordyn B in 9th (25.26) and Felicity vdP /Isabella G 10th (27.21) out of the 35 finishers.

Today are the Short Course Championships at Halswell Quarry.

Athletics Success - 8 out of 8 relay wins!

In stunning conditions today, the FOS Athletics team performed superbly at the West Zone Athletic Sports at Ilam. For the first time in a number of years we managed to win all the relays we entered - eight out of eight! (see pictures of our four boys' teams opposite - 11 years, 10, 9 and 8 down the blog). It was very exciting! We also had another 20 individual title winners and many other place getters - full results from our FOS team will be out this weekend. A big thanks to all our parents who came to support the team and Mr Holland who was the starter.

We will have a huge team competing at the Primary Sports Canterbury Athletic Championships (Centrals) on Tuesday 30 November at QEII - where all winning relay teams and those placed 1st or 2nd in individual events will represent the West Zone. (only for children in the 9 years category and above).

Athletic Sports Finals

In perfect conditions tonight, we had some superb performances from the Fendalton children competing in the 38 finals across two and a half hours in our Athletic Sports Finals night. Every child who made finals tonight is to be congratulated on their effort and determination to make it to that level.

A number of records were broken and this shows just how exceptional the performances were. It was a thrill to have FOS old boy Corey Anderson present the trophies and ribbons. Corey is the youngest cricketer ever to be contracted to NZ Cricket, is a member of the Senior Canterbury Cricket team and he has a FOS Discus record and a cup named after him.

Full results will appear soon but congratulations to our overall champions:
Junior Girls: Stassi N
Junior Boys: Alex E
Senior Girls: Cille N
Senior Boys: Logan S-S

Thanks to the PTA for their food stall, to all the teachers who gave up their time to attend and all parents, family members and supporters who supported the children.

Fendalton Friends Commonwealth Games Review

Tigerlily explaining why Maddy won a Fair Play Award

Wow, what amazing athletes we have at Fendalton School! Today we had the Fendalton Friends Commonwealth Games and the whole school, including all staff, were involved and even Room 3, who have only been at school three days, joined in.....and WON MEDALS.

Prince Charles made a flying visit to open the Games after the Parade of Nations and after Alex and Edward, our oldest and youngest pupils, had run in the Queen's Baton and read the Athletes' oath.

The Games were fiercely competed in by all of the 56 teams and it was great to hear of the children's highlights at the Closing Ceremony. It was also a thrill to see so many children win Fair Play Awards for being super Fendalton Friends.

A very close fought competition saw the Bronze Medals awarded to Bangladesh on 268 out of a possible 280 points. The Gold and Silver Medals were decided on a countback after two teams tied on 273 points. Silver went to Tonga and our Gold medals for 2010 went to Botswana.

Thanks to the parents and others who came to support us. Bring on the Olympics in 2012!

PSC Winter Sports Tournament

Last week the Primary Sports Canterbury Winter tournament was held. We were one of the few schools in canterbury to have four teams qualify by winning their Zone tournament.

Our A Hockey team took third place after drawing with the eventual winners, Tai Tapu in pool play. They were a little disappointed but can still be very proud of their efforts especially since their Hatch Cup player was missing.

The A Football team also had a few players missing including their capatian and two PSC Cross Country reps but did well to get 11th out of the 14 teams and they enjoyed themselves.

The A Netball team came 4th in their section and were excited to win three and lose three. The B team, who qualified as second top school in our zone, were up against all A teams but still manged one win - well done!

Well done to all teams and thanks to the parents who helped with transport and supervision - a long winter season!

Schools Orienteering Festival

We have 100 children approx. entered in the Schools' Orienteering Festival that was postponed due to the Earthquake - below is news about the event from the organisers:

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for your patience over the last week. I hope that life is returning to some form of normality for most of you while being aware that for many around us that will be a long time coming.

It is hoped to reschedule the Schools Orienteering Festival to Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November with the sprints on Saturday at Halswell Quarry and the Long on Sunday probably in the Bottle Lake Forest area. These plans are still subject to landowner approval but as we know that term 3 finishes for some of you tomorrow (today by the time you read this) we wanted to bring up to date with our plans.

We will confirm the date and venues as soon as possible and then we will be able to discuss if the original entries are to stand or if we start again and likewise entry fee payments/refunds.

Regards,

A big thank you to all who offered to help during the events and who have been working hard in the lead up to the weekend. We hope that we can find another date sometime next term to reschedule but that decision is some time away.

B Netball Team are Winners!

Fendalton B Under 11 netball team played their final on Saturday (see story below), to finish runner up to Belfast after extra time in a thrilling match. Since the prize giving, however, Christchurch Netball Centre has advised that the full time score – 23-23, should have been recorded as the final result, in which case Fendalton is to share the title with Belfast: the umpires made a mistake ordering the teams to play extra time, and the goals scored in that time have been expunged.

So even bigger congratulations to the team, who are DEFINITELY champions now, even though their supporters knew that anyway!
