B Netball Team are Winners!
Fendalton B Under 11 netball team played their final on Saturday (see story below), to finish runner up to Belfast after extra time in a thrilling match. Since the prize giving, however, Christchurch Netball Centre has advised that the full time score – 23-23, should have been recorded as the final result, in which case Fendalton is to share the title with Belfast: the umpires made a mistake ordering the teams to play extra time, and the goals scored in that time have been expunged.
So even bigger congratulations to the team, who are DEFINITELY champions now, even though their supporters knew that anyway!

Fendalton B runners up in thrilling final
Fendalton B lost by the narrowest margin in the Christchurch Netball Centre’s Under 11 Division Two final on Saturday, going down in extra time to a strong and consistent Belfast team.
On a still and sunny Hagley Park netball court, Fendalton B took the lead at the start of the game and led most of the way through the first quarter, before Belfast clicked into gear and went into quarter time 7-4 ahead. Fendalton fought back well in the second quarter, bringing the match level at 11 all by half time.
Belfast rebuilt their lead through the third quarter, with Fendalton again catching their opponent and taking the lead for much of the final quarter. By the end of the match, though, they had not done quite enough to hold onto their advantage, some nerves holding the Fendalton players back and some good teamwork by Belfast bringing the scores even at the final whistle with 23 each.
In the extra time period, one team could finish the game by gaining a clear two goal lead. Belfast had the centre pass to start extra time, scoring with their first attack. Fendalton replied promptly and confidently to bring it back even. Belfast then scored, leaving, Fendalton the job of scoring again to stay in touch. After three unsuccessful Fendalton attempts in the shooting circle, Belfast’s defence managed to secure the ball, moving it down the court to achieve the winning goal, with the final score 26-24.
Although it was a shame that anyone should lose such an exciting and memorable game, well done to Belfast for holding their nerve to the end, and what a great performance by Fendalton to come so close to winning the trophy.
Congratulations to Fendalton B stars Sam, Katie, Helena, Cille, Millie, Ashleigh and Stella, plus Kirsten who missed the final and Flossie from the A team who was standing by in case a sub was needed, and Alice whose injury earlier in the season kept her on the sideline.

Silver and Bronze to Ski Team
Fendalton Saturday Netball B team makes the final
On Saturday Fendalton B advanced to the Christchurch Netball Centre’s Under 11 Division Two final this weekend after beating Thorrington 20-10. After a dominant first quarter, when Fendalton raced to a 9-1 lead, it looked as if the match was well and truly safe, but Thorrington fought back well in the second and third quarters to within three goals of Fendalton, whose nerves started to show. However, the final quarter saw the team rebuild their big lead, and confirm that they will play Belfast in Saturday’s final. The game is at 10.30 at Hagley Park and all support will be most welcome.

Semi Final Awaits for Fendalton B Saturday Netball team
Playing in Christchurch Netball Centre’s Saturday competition in the Under 11 grade, Fendalton B pulled off a memorable victory at the weekend to go through to a semi-final next Saturday. Needing to win or draw against St Nicholas to go through, the team had a very nervous start and seemed to have lost the great form they have shown in recent weeks. Down by 3-6 at half-time and trailing 7-9 at three quarter time, in the final quarter it all came together in superb fashion with Fendalton B racking up seven unanswered goals to win by 14-9. An excellent team performance, with everyone making a great contribution. This Saturday’s semi-final is against Thorrington A, a team that Fendalton B played last term for a 13-13 draw, so it is likely to be a big challenge, but one the girls can overcome if they can continue on from the final quarter of the game on Saturday.
